Maru does not give his name out willy-nilly. To strangers and people he hasn’t known very long he will introduce himself as ‘Griever’s Vessel’ because his identity was technically stripped from him on ‘leaving’ his tribe. Scions and select npcs may refer to him as Maru, otherwise he’s known as ‘Griever’s’ to everyone else. Just because you as the Mun know his name is Maru, doesn’t mean that your character does.Maru’s default verse is his WoL verse which follows canon insomuchas I remember it.
For his non-WoL verse, his backstory (see the about page) stays the same, only he doesn’t become the WoL, rather remains a simple adventurer occasionally getting swept up in the WoL’s adventures in his bid to expose the primal within to everything.**A note about hurting the muse! I have absolutely no problem with your character landing punches, pushes, throws, stabs, pinches, cheek pulling, etc etc. I like the challenge it presents in writing and all the ‘he/she tried to hit’ or ‘he/she aimed for’ actually drives me a little up the wall. Just hit him, shove him, even kiss him and I’ll decide how bad it is and how he reacts to it. If you want to do something debilitating for the encounter to go a certain way, just let me know beforehand.
About

(For his profile, see bottom of page)Once, his name had been C’maru Tia.Once, he’d grown up within the C tribe on the barren, rocky outskirts of the Sagolii Desert where a thin river ran in defiance of the heat, yellowed spindly plants struggling to survive. It had been a simpler life, back then.–x–An aspiring young hunter, C'maru had been honing his skills to enable him to challenge the Sandworms that hid amongst the dunes while he would hunt Orobon for food. The hatchling drakes were developing smoothly too, so when he was ready to tackle the Sandworms he would have a mount upon which he could ride into battle.Everything would change before he could ever have the chance to ride a Drake though.-x-It had been a normal evening prayer before the icon of the Primal, asking him to watch over them when the ground had begun to shake.Groundshaking wasn’t unheard of but it was rare enough that the Nunh and elders of the tribe were worried. The icon of Griever wobbled and shook in its nook and the tribe huddled close to the ground so as not to fall over. C’maru reached for the icon to prevent it from falling from its place. A tent toppled behind them somewhere but no-one turned to find out whose. Young members of the tribe whimpered in fear and huddled close to their parents while everyone waited for it to pass. There were sighs of relief when it did but relief turned to shock when all eyes followed those of the elders.C’Maru shrank under their collective staring as the tribe began to whisper, never taking their eyes from him.“Griever’s chosen,” spoke one of the elders in a mix of awe and fear.Truly, something had happened during the quaking of the ground. C’maru’s hair and fur had gone from the colour of dark leather to pure white; and his eyes, no longer their warm brown, were a deep and intimidating crimson. A mark of white, like a tattoo, curled down the left side of his face. He felt different, but he couldn’t have explained exactly how.He knew they spoke the truth though.
Every tribesman grew up in the metaphorical shadow of Griever, knowing that one day the Primal would ‘touch’ one of the tribe, that he might see the world as they became a vessel for his aether. It was a great honour to be chosen by their deity to be his eyes however it also meant he was about to begin a journey he never would have imagined. It meant venturing out beyond the borders of the desert he called home, away from everything he knew and there was a high chance he would not live to see his tribe again. With sad looks in their eyes, the elders explained that as Griever’s vessel, he had no tribe. They took his name- no longer would he C’maru, and ordered him to dress in his strongest hunting leathers. With a sack of provisions, sent him on his way.He was born to the tribe C’Maru Tia. He left it Griever’s Vessel. In the weeks and months that would follow, he would journey all the way into heart of Gridania and beneath the boughs in Old Gridania he would take up the lance, with its familiarity to the hunting spears and harpoons of his life in the tribe.Little did he know that even having begun his journey as Griever’s Vessel, his adventures were yet in their infancy, because fate had another title in store for him. That of the Warrior of Light.- x - x - x -Regarding Griever:
Griever is a primal who was gifted to the early Miqo'te soon after the Sundering and pre-Allag, by the Ascian Pashtarot. In the time of the Convocation, Pashtarot had a pet project based upon his position, ie: the preservation of order and discipline, that took the form of a huge horned and winged feline that the ancient became quite fond of.Either out of sentimentality for the cat or out of an early belief that the primal could restore order in the wake of the Sundering and return things to how they were, when he beheld the Miqo'te race the Ascian granted them the knowledge of how to summon an approximation of his creation and thus, Griever the primal was born.Over time, due to the subjugation of the Miqo'te by the Allagans and their dispersal once they made their way to Eorzea, the means of summoning him was lost. However, some few Miqo'te retained the memories of him and C Tribe in particular continued to worship him. It’s not known how exactly it’s possible but every half dozen generations or so, Griever ‘touches’ a member of the tribe, gifting them a measure of his aether that he might experience the world through them rather than touching the world himself, through a more traditional summoning. This ‘touch’ marks the receiver with a white tribal-like tattoo on their body, turns their hair and fur white and turns their eyes red.Once touched, C Tribe elders would kit out the tribesman (or woman) with what supplies they could and essentially exile them from the tribe, stripping the member of their name so as to remove any attachment to anyone or anywhere. This would allow the tribesman to roam as far as they could so they could see and experience as much of the world as possible. They believed that Griever would judge the world and if it was found wanting, he’d bring about a great cataclysm to essentially wipe the slate clean that the world might start over.Practically speaking, Griever has not been anything more than formless aether within the host body however with that anchor, it is possible for Griever to pour more of his aether into the vessel to take possession of it and the more aether he expends to do this, the more the physical form warps into something more closely resembling him. With the transfer of large amounts of aether into the vessel there comes an increased risk of them becoming a conduit for tempering people around them, though given his behaviour to that point, it’s unlikely that Griever would intentionally temper anyone.Initially Griever was not an active presence but in recent times, Maru has become more aware of him, like the great cat is stretching, perhaps preparing to cast his judgement…Profile:Name: Griever’s Vessel, Griever, Griever’s, Master Vessel (Maru only to those closest to him)
